At Georgia Southern, we believe that students learn best from each other. That’s why Flight Leaders play a vital role in supporting and mentoring incoming first-year students as they transition to college life. As a Flight Leader, you’ll serve as a role model, provide guidance in and out of the classroom, and help first-year students feel at home at Georgia Southern.

This is more than just a leadership role—it’s an opportunity to develop valuable skills, build connections, and make a lasting impact on your peers and the university community.

Positions are available on both the Armstrong and Statesboro campuses.

What Flight Leaders Do

Flight Leaders are expected to:

  • Foster an inclusive and supportive environment for first-year students.
  • Serve as a mentor and resource, helping students navigate academic and social life.
  • Promote a positive and respectful community inside and outside the classroom.
  • Guide students to campus resources that support their academic and personal goals.
  • Support FYE 1220 instructors by actively engaging in the classroom.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete Flight Leader training to prepare for the role.
  • Attend all class meetings and Flight Leader Training Lab
  • Meet regularly with assigned faculty instructor
  • Support instruction of the course through communication, making referrals to campus resources, attendance tracking, grading, and mentorship of students
  • Refer students to appropriate campus resources based on their needs.
  • Support departmental programming initiatives

Eligibility Requirements

To apply, you must:

  • Must be enrolled in six or more undergraduate credit hours.
  • Must have earned a minimum grade of B in FYE 1220 or equivalent.
  • Must have and maintain a 3.0 gpa or higher.
  • Must have a clear judicial record.
  • Must complete required 16 hours of training.
  • Be committed to supporting and mentoring first-year students.
